This type of social scam aims to steal the user’s personal data

Have you ever received a phone call and the person on the other end of the phone has posed as a company or organization in order to obtain your personal and/or banking information? If the answer is yes, you have fallen victim to the social engineering scam known as vishing. According to the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE), vishing is “a type of social engineering scam over the phone in which, through a call, the identity of a company or organization is impersonated, in order to obtain personal and sensitive of the victim. In other words, they impersonate the identity to obtain any sensitive and personal data, such as online banking access codes.
Types of vishing
Although more sophisticated techniques and arguments are increasingly used to carry out this type of scam, some vishing is more frequent than others.
“Bank” phone calls
1 If you receive a phone call in which the person on the other end identifies himself as a worker of a suspicious bank. One of the most used techniques is to call the user and inform them that someone is carrying out a fraudulent operation with their bank card. In this way, the person who is scamming requests some data sent through an SMS.
Calls from a telephone company
2 If they pretend to be a commercial from a telephone company, assuring that there has been some kind of error in the direct debit of an invoice, you should be wary. It is a type of vishing to have access to bank details.

3 A salesperson who wants to sell any type of product or material through a phone call is highly suspicious. If you receive this type of call, remember not to give any personal or bank information.
How to protect yourself
Given the increase in these scam techniques, it is necessary to always be aware of possible fraudulent calls and never give out personal data of any kind through telephone calls.

1 It seems obvious but, sometimes, we can provide our personal data in the middle of a phone call. We have to keep in mind that no bank or organization will ever ask us for confidential information through a call. Also read La Vanguardia
