If you look at the 5 most played computer games right now, it is clear that “old is oldest” even in the gaming world. With one exception, the list consists of games that have several years behind them, alternatively games that are parts of franchises that have been around for a long time.
1. Minecraft
At the top of the list we find the billion dollar industry that is Minecraft. 11 years after it was first released, it tops the list of the most played PC games right now. Mojang continues to release updates at regular intervals, giving its players new creative opportunities. Estimates claim that more than 600 million people have played the construction and survival simulator.
2. League of Legends
The only game that really comes close to being able to compete with Minecraft is League of Legends, or “LoL” as it is often called. Game developer Riot Games’ MOAB (Multiplayer online battle arena) team game attracts somewhere around 8 million players daily. LoL constantly attracts new players with its varied gameplay with tons of tactical possibilities. The fact that it is then one of the most profitable games in eSports naturally attracts lots of new players as well.
3. Cyberpunk 2077
In third place we find the list’s only completely new game. Polish game developer CD Projekt Red has been struggling for years to bring Cyberpunk 2077 which is their first really big game release since Witcher 3 which was released in 2015. Considering how hugely successful Witcher 3 has become, the expectations for Cyberpunk have been huge. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like they really succeeded in fulfilling them. The first few months of the game have been shaky to say the least. Numerous bugs have been reported at the same time as CD Projekt Red has been rocked by negative publicity surrounding staff who were forced to work long overtime hours during the game’s production.
4. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
Valve’s Counter-Strike lives on, year after year. Anyone who is old enough already played CS almost 20 years ago. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, or CS:GO as it is most often called, is the latest variant of the game concept that involves fast FPS matches between terrorists and counter-terrorists. The last officially published figure for how many people play CS:GO was published in 2019. The figure was then roughly 20 million players every month. Considering how active the community is around the game and all the regular competitions that are organized, there is nothing to suggest that the popularity has decreased.
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Warzone
The Call of Duty series divides the player world. The players who see themselves as connoisseurs often dismiss it as expensive games without content. In those cases, the complaints often revolve around the fact that in recent years the series has not really succeeded with its single player campaigns. Many others see it as a worse version of CS:GO. A lot of players simply get lost in a series that so far includes 24 titles. It goes without saying that quality varies. Warzone which is the latest release is entirely a multiplayer game in the style of CS:GO, and it has been successful enough to give CoD the fifth place on the list of the most played computer games right now.
