The mobile has become our new multipurpose tool. It works for almost everything: check the current account status, make transfers, make purchases, listen to the radio, watch TV or pay at any store. The only thing missing is for someone to design an application to carry the DNI, the document that is recommended to carry every time we leave home. At the moment, the alternative is to physically carry it in the wallet or in the smartphone case.
We will not be able to carry the DNI on the mobile until the National Police completes the app for its integration. The announcement was made in 2020 and this year the Ministry of the Interior reaffirmed that it would design an application for that purpose. However, no term or date for its implementation has been announced. In addition, the Spanish app has come up with a competitor, the digital wallet of the European Union (EU).

The National Police, the body responsible for issuing the document, is working “already on a next technological evolution of this card for its integration into the mobile phone, a project with which the digital identity document will be created.” That was the announcement in 2020 of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

“Our project will convert smartphones into digital identity supports that will allow citizens to prove their affiliation data, address, handwritten signature and validity of the DNI,” said Grande-Marlaska at the time, aware that the mobile “is no longer a simple means of telecommunication.
This is what Interior called the DNI 4.0 Project, which will culminate an evolution strategy promoted by the General Directorate of Police to provide it with “greater strengths against cybercrime, more secure for telematic commerce and more agile in relationship management with public administrations and private organizations.
Since then, little news. Nothing is known about what the app will be like or its benefits. Interior continues with the project, although without specifying deadlines. As Grande-Marlaska announced during the closing ceremony of the XIV CERES Conference, organized in Madrid by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre last October, she hopes to be able to present the application “very soon”.
The new virtual format will allow citizens to access their data stored in the DNI file and accredit themselves with the same validity as if they were using the physical document. However, the holder indicated a possible reason for his delay, the necessary modification of the community regulation that regulates electronic identification and electronic transactions in the internal market. Something that the European Union is already working on, he pointed out.

Before its launch, the Spanish app had a competitor. This is the European Digital Identity, better known as the European digital portfolio, a project promoted by the European Commission (EC) that will also allow you to identify or confirm certain personal information.
In addition to our ID, with this application we will be able to carry out many other operations.

1 Request a birth or medical certificate or communicate a change of address. 2 Opening a bank account. 3 Filing a tax return. 4 Application for a place at a university, in the country of residence or in another Member State. 5 Storing a prescription. 6 Rent a car using a digital driving license. 7 Registration in a hotel.
While waiting for the app to carry the DNI on the mobile, the closest thing we have in our country is miDGT, a free mobile application to carry the driver’s license and vehicle documentation in digital format. In addition, the user can carry out other procedures such as requesting a vehicle report, paying your fines or indicating if the vehicle is usually driven by another person.
