The iPhone Lightning connector is about to come to an end. Faced with the new European law of 2024, Apple has assured that it will make the final transition to USB-C next year. In this way, it will eliminate its famous – and hated – Lightning port from its iPhones and equip its phones with a USB-C, the current standard connector that is already present in iPad and Mac products.
As the Chinese analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is a reference when it comes to reporting on Apple, has warned, the Cupertino company will start using USB-C next year in order to arrive on time for the entry into force of the law. As Apple manufactures several models of the same generation, Kuo has warned that the new ports will be an element to differentiate those that are basic and those that are high-end. This is something that Tim Cook’s company has been doing for a few generations.
In this way, the next iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to the analyst, will have a higher transfer speed than the base model and the iPhone 15 Plus. In this sense, these two models will not benefit from any speed increase.
The most basic models of the next generation of the iPhone will only support USB 2.0 transfer rates, which correspond to the transfer rates of current Lightning ports, which are limited to 480 Mbps.
On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could at least adopt USB-C 3.2 or even Thunderbolt 3. Therefore, USB-C 3.2 could improve data transfer speeds up to 20 Gbps, while Thunderbolt 3 would increase it up to 40 Gbps.

Apple
The new generation of iPhone still does not have an arrival date. However, following Apple’s usual schedule, it would have to arrive sometime in the second half of 2023.
What else will they have?
Kuo himself advanced a few weeks ago that Apple’s new high-end mobiles will have the A17 Bionic chip, which is the most powerful of the company. These chips will provide performance and efficiency improvements.
On the other hand, the analyst also explained that the solid buttons will disappear. That is, they will eliminate the volume and lock buttons, thus returning to something similar to the iPhone 7.
