The rise in prices reaches the telecommunications sector. Movistar will raise its prices in Spain by 6.8% on average starting next January, as confirmed by the Spanish firm at the Technology, Media and Telecommunications conference held by Morgan Stanley in Barcelona.
The operator will begin to notify its customers by letter in the coming days of the new price of their bill for the coming year. The cost will be different depending on the rate that the user has contracted and the company speaks of a “customized increase”, since the new MiMovistar rate structure is committed to flexibility when choosing packages.

Movistar justifies this measure for three reasons: increased costs, inflation growth and regulatory changes, although it does not give more details about these modifications. In any case, the firm defends that the price increase would be below the inflation of the last 12 months.

For example, a rate that includes a connectivity package, basic Movistar television, and soccer will experience a 5.6% increase. Watching sport will also be more expensive. Those customers who have contracted the football module will cost them two more euros per month from January. Not all the packages will go up: the other brand of connectivity and telephony of Telefónica in Spain (O2) will maintain the prices.
Movistar has also increased the price of its promotional packages. According to an analysis of the Ysi price comparator, it raised the prices of the promotions it carries out in three of its offers by between three and six euros: the 300 mbps fiber with 30 Gb of mobile data and its 1 Gb fiber with 1 and 2 unlimited mobiles. For its part, Orange has cut promotions for its pay television offers by nine months, including those for football, which now last for three months.

Clients were on guard against further increases. During the last presentation of results, the CEO of Telefónica, Ángel Vilá, already advanced this repositioning of rates by ensuring that the operator would continue applying its “more for more” strategy to adapt to the market.
Movistar is not the only company that will review its prices upwards. Other companies in the sector such as Orange have opened the door to price increases if the high inflation scenario persisted. In the case of Vodafone, it applies increases to its rates in general and not to the promotional price. These increases range from three to five euros.
