Usually, the negative side of social networks tends to outweigh the positive side due to the strong impact it brings to society. In them, toxic behaviors and attitudes are produced, racist and misogynistic hate speech is spread or acts of cyberbullying are committed. Reasons why some people decide not to be part of them or try to do so from the maximum privacy that is offered to them through the exhibition. But, what if there was a social network where it was only allowed to treat others well?
Since this year it has become a reality, its name is Gas and it is sweeping the United States. It has managed to climb to first place in download volume, above heavyweights like TikTok or the also recently meteoric success BeReal. For now it is only available in a few states, but its users are growing at breakneck speed. The key to this app? Only positivity is allowed.
How does the Gas social network work?
The intention of the application is that its users dedicate good comments to each other. For its creators, the goal of Gas is to generate a feeling of comfort among them and to have a positive impact on their mental health, in order to create a healthy community.
Gas is a social network for answering questions, in survey format, launched anonymously and is also used to send compliments to other users. It also has a system that limits the interaction between them to avoid negative situations or harassment. After all, the name of this application corresponds to the expression “gas somebody up”, which refers to the action of raising someone’s self-esteem.

Why is Gas successful?
Social networks can open multiple doors to knowledge, meet people from other places and countries, find out what is happening in the rest of the world, discover new cultures or simply receive and/or hold enriching conversations. But they also have the ability to become cesspools where all the worst of today’s society is concentrated. And it is a great risk to which 87.1% of the Spanish population is subjected daily, which is the number of people who connect to the Internet according to the latest report by Digital Report Spain.
Despite the requirements imposed by social networks when creating an account on them, many minors browse their platforms on a daily basis, despite the dangers they may encounter. And it is a particularly serious case in women, protagonists of some very worrying cyberbullying data: 80% of young people between 16 and 24 years old have suffered it, as confirmed by data from the Ministry of Equality.
For all these reasons, having a safe space, articulated on a system that prevents cyberbullying, and focused on sharing compliments and positive actions, such as the Gas social network, is assuming a real revolution.
